Early Dothan Schools

Young Junior High School

youngJrHighSchool

Young Junior High School was one of Alabama’s first fully-accredited junior high schools.  B.B. Baker came into the system in 1919 as superintendent and during his administration Alabama adopted the 6-3-3 system or elementary, junior and senior units.

Dothan was one of the first towns in the state to come under the new system, by erecting at cost of $93,000 this brick structure on the Dusy-Lafayette Street corner.

It was named for J. R. Young, who had served for many years on the board of education.
